I have written before that one of the things I love most about indiepop is that if you love the music you can make things happen. You can create your own excitement! It could be putting on bands at gigs in your area, forming your own band, starting a blog, a fanzine or setting up your own label. Excitement and enthusiasm is infectious and it is surprising how quickly things can gain momentum.
At Indietracks 2010, after seeing The Sunny Street, I decided it was about time I picked up a bass guitar again and started making a racket with some friends. The Sunny Street made playing pop music look like so much fun. And so, The Proctors got back together again and have resumed our quest for the perfect pop song.
Also at Indietracks 2010, I met Gary from Cambridge who I had first got to know through Last FM. We were chatting about the indiepop scene in general, and I knew he had put on some gigs in Cambridge, but had he ever thought of starting a label? Yes, he replied, but it looked like quite a time consuming task and possibly too expensive.
Fast forward a few months and Dufflecoat Records is born. Gary had decided to take the plunge and start a label. The workload is also shared by Joz (Maritime Records) from Indonesia. The ethos of the label is to share all the fantastic sounds from around the world. A global indiepop label! There is much more information here.
Three new releases are due out on 11th July 2011 by Skittle Alley, Peru and The Kensingtons. All fantastic indiepop EPs. Gary has kindly allowed me to share a song from each EP. If you are attending the wonderful Limoges Popfest in France on 9th July copies will also be available there as well. There will be more releases in the coming months featuring some great bands. Make sure you check out Dufflecoat Records!
Skittle Alley - I Think About You Everyday
Peru - Drift On
